About Open Mind Psychological Services

Hello, I'm Dr. Nick Brown. I entered the field of psychology with a goal of helping people. But what does it mean to be "helped?" In my experience, people often develop combative, avoidant relationships with their difficult and painful emotions. This makes sense, because sitting with difficult and painful emotions is hard! And yet, I find that the more we resist these parts of ourselves, the more they persist. And thus the fundamental goal I have as a therapist is to help people see that these difficult, painful aspects of ourselves are human, and that they can be processed and managed in healthy and effective ways. I employ a collaborative style that allows me to determine what my client is specifically looking for from treatment, and I use evidence-based strategies that are aimed at achieving meaningful improvement in a reasonable amount of time. If you have gotten discouraged by prior therapy due to not meeting your goals, I implore you not to give up! I deeply believe we all have the capacity to change with the right helping hand, as I have witnessed it many times over the course of my career.
I am licensed in the states of Texas (PSY39919) and California (PSY30387), and offer both in-person services (in Texas) and telehealth services. Additionally, I am authorized to provide telehealth services to individuals in over 40 states through PSYPACT®, including AL, AZ, AR, CO, CNMI, CT, DE, DC, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, ME, MD, MI, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NC, ND, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WA, WV, WI, and WY.

What do you mean by "Open Mind?"
An unhealthy mind is often constricted, repetitive, and rigid. These characteristics make it hard to focus on anything other than our current distress, detracting from our quality of life and ability to function. An open mind, on the other hand, is one that can freely roam between different interests and demands. Additionally, an open mind is capable of flexible, nuanced thinking- where both strengths and weaknesses and successes and failures can all be acknowledged at once. An open mind tends allows us to throw ourselves into what truly matters to us, and to do so with trust in our ability to handle what comes our way. These are the qualities I would like to help you cultivate.
